Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

During the month of May, many businesses and people hold “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” which raises money for cancer research.

As the years go on, it becomes increasingly popular. This year, the cancer council aim to reach over $11 million.

As my contribution to such a worthwhile cause I baked some vanilla biscuits and decorated them In a variety of ways. I decorated some with the well known breast cancer pink ribbon, I also baked some teapots and the remainder of the biscuits I decorated in blue and yellow which are the colors of the “biggest morning tea.”

Although the cancer council is synonymous with daffodils, I made do with whatever flower cutters I had. Next time I will try the daffodils.

Let’s hope the cancer council reaches its target through generous donations!

Handyman Birthday

I have now completed my first handyman theme cake!

I was asked to do a cake for a guy who is a gyprocker (is that the right term?) by trade. So I made a screwdriver, a hammer and a trowel. I also wanted to have “happy birthday” written on the cake somewhere so decided to incorporate that on the tape measure.

It was a fairly plain and simple cake but effective.

The cake was a vanilla cake with shavings of dark chocolate through it and white chocolate ganache.

Soccer Mad Birthday

Over the weekend I completed some cupcakes and cookies on sticks for a Soccer ball mad 2 year old.

Can I just say that these soccer balls were one of the hardest things I’ve done so far!! I tried all sorts of things for these balls- making flat cupcake toppers and hand painting the design, making round balls and hand painting them. Each time, they came out ok but not good enough. In the end I moulded the half ball and painted on the necessary pattern and was happy with the end result.

The cupcakes were a gluten free chocolate (my first gluten free) with a buttercream frosting and the cookies were vanilla flavored.

Happy Mother’s Day

On Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day. It has always been a special day but now that I am a mother to three beautiful girls, it is extra special … Not for the gifts but for the smiles and hugs I received all the day through.

To help celebrate I baked some cupcakes and made some little toppers to go with them. I also wrapped some cupcakes in special love heart cupcake wrappers.

The cupcakes were vanilla flavored with Swiss buttercream (which was supposed to be tinted pink but you can’t really tell in this photo).

Birthday Cupcakes

Following on from the soccer themed cake I baked earlier in the week, I also baked some cupcake was part of the birthday boy’s celebration with his friends.

I made different toppers from his hobbies/interests.

It was my first attempt at making a soccer boot and the black one in the bottom corner is supposed to be darth vadar.

The cupcakes were vanilla with a vanilla Swiss buttercream.

A Very Happy Soccer Birthday

Last week was a busy baking week with birthdays and mother’s day.

The first cake I baked was for my brother in law’s birthday. I decided on a soccer related theme as this year he is also celebrating 20 years with the same soccer team.

My girls put their own personal touch on the cake board by painting with food coloring gels!

The cake was a devil’s food cake (my preferred choice of chocolate cake at the moment) with dark chocolate ganache.

Once Upon a Time …

Once upon a time there lived a little girl who turned 3!!!!

My second eldest daughter turned three during the week. Like her older sister she loves princesses. She has always teetered between Snow White and Belle, with Snow White having a slight advantage in the last little while. So this set the foundation of the cake.

I would have liked to do a cake in the shape of a book with the characters popping out but that didn’t fly with the little Miss. She just wanted Snow White … So I made Snow White … and a red apple … and a dwarf (not sure who it is … We’ll go with Happy). I was all set to decorate when the cheeky one says to me the day before, “mum it’s good but do you know what would make it perfect? … Belle.” So I made Belle, the mirror she uses to see her Papa, a rose with falling rose petals. And that’s where it stopped.

The end result was pretty good. And it was all worth it when she said on her birthday morning, “thank you mummy, it’s beautiful!”

The cake was a chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache.
